Radio Mirchi airs satirical radio campaign on tourist safety, then removes it

Last week, after a Swiss couple was harassed and brutally attacked by a group of men at Fatehpur Sikri near Agra – the site of the famous Taj Mahal in India, Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM ran a campaign to draw attention to the problem of safety for tourists.

Quentin Jeremy Clerc, 24, fractured his skull and suffered nerve damage while his girlfriend Marie Droz, 24, was left with a fractured arm in the attack.

Clerc told investigators that after visiting the Taj Mahal, they visited Fatehpur Sikri, where they were followed by four young men for an hour who teased them, tried to engage them in a conversation, blocked their way and forcibly took selfies with Droz. When Clerc tried to intervene, he was hit repeatedly with a stick until he fell to the ground. Droz too was attacked brutally, while bystanders allegedly made videos of the couple on their mobile phones.

The channel ran a 48-second jingle under the campaign #MatAaoIndia (Don’t visit India), which was a satirical spin on the government’s official tourism slogan of ‘Incredible India’.

The words of the campaign are:

Dil dekho, Taj dekho, (See the hearts, see the Taj)

Mughlon ka ye bagh dekho, India ka ye itihaas dekho,(See the gardens of the Mughals and the history of India)

Atithi ka saaman dekho, khush hote mehman dekho, (See the respect we have for guests, see the happy smiles on their faces)

Yeh pehle tha, ab…(That was then. And now…)

Goa ka samundar dekho, touriston ko tang dekho, (See the sea at Goa, and the tourists being harassed)

Mehmaan apna Russian dekho, uska molestation dekho, (See your Russian guest, and her molestation too)

Fatehpur ki shaan dekho, couples hue pareshan dekho, (See the splendour of Fatehpur, and the couples being troubled there)

Pyaar ka samman dekho, naye Bharat ki shaan dekho, (See the respect we have for love, see the splendour of new India)

Maut ka moral kaam dekho, atithi ka apmaan dekho (See the morality of death, see the way we insult guests)

India aana aapki sehat ke liye haanikarak hai, (Coming to India is injurious to health)

Atithi devo nahi #MatAaoIndia. (Guests are not gods. Do not come to India)

As soon as the station’s vice president and regional programming head Akash Banerjee tweeted the promo on Thursday night, he was trolled by ‘nationalist’ Twitter handles, accusing him of spearheading an “anti-India campaign”. Complaints were lodged with the Information and Broadcasting ministry and the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) and demands were made to sack Banerjee or be prepared for a boycott of the radio station.

Soon, the station dropped the campaign and issued an apology.

Earlier this year, the radio station had also scrapped its popular ‘Mitron’ segment, which satirised Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While tourism minister K J Alphons has claimed that the “stories” of India being unsafe for foreign tourists are “exaggerated”, a reply to a Right To Information (RTI) application filed by a local activist claimed that 245 foreigners have died in Goa in the last 12 years.

In 2015, 365 crimes against foreigners in India were registered, of which 271 were against tourists.

There has also been a decline in the number of foreign visitors to Taj Mahal in Agra from 790,000 in 2012, to 636,000 in 2015.

Qatar’s Minister of Culture and Sports Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali launched four new private radio stations for expat Indians in the country last week.

Indians make up the largest expatriate group in the country and these are the first radio stations from the sub-continent to be aired from Qatar.

Two of these stations, Malayalam 98.6 FM and Suno 91.7 FM will be airing programmes in Malayalam - which is spoken in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

The other two stations, Radio Olive 106.3 FM and One FM Radio 89.6 FM are in Hindi.

98.6 FM will broadcast between 5am and 11pm and will air music programmes, current affairs and talk shows, while Radio Suno 91.7 FM, another Malayalam radio service, promises on its website that “Malayalis in Qatar will never miss their home town as it brings love from God's own country.”

Radio Olive and One FM – the Hindi stations, promise Bollywood songs and latest gossip to their listeners.

There are plans to launch more radio channels in the country in other languages such as English, French, Spanish and Filipino.

Sheikhah Najla Al Thani, Director of Broadcasting Licensing Department at the Ministry, said the new channels will help these communities to know more Qatari news, culture and tradition and incorporate more in the local society.

Indian Ambassador to Qatar, P Kumaran, said that the new radio channels will help people understand each other and promote creative diversity in the country.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, al-Ali said the coming phase will see the launch of new radio stations for other expatriate groups to reflect media freedom in Qatar, stressing that these channels are “completely independent in their content and directions”. He also stressed that Qatar is one of the easiest places to obtain such licences even in terms of fees, which are “very low and don’t hinder those interested in radio investment.”

He said there are several requests to launch new radio stations and these are currently being reviewed as there are not enough radio frequencies at the moment for the stations applied for, but there will be new technical solutions by 2018.

He also spoke of co-ordination between Es’hailSat — the Qatar Satellite Company and different state institutions to support the private sector and launch new stations.

UNICEF India, in partnership with All India Radio (AIR) and the Association of Radio Operators of India (AROI), hosted the second edition of the Radio4Child awards in Mumbai on Friday.

The awards recognize creative and innovative programming on the issue of Routine Immunization and ‘End Violence’ against women and children.

Immunization is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions that currently averts an estimated two to three million deaths globally every year.  India has one of the largest immunization programmes in the world, in terms of the number of beneficiaries, geographical coverage and quantities of vaccine used, with nearly 26 million newborn babies targeted for immunization each year. Over 9 million immunization sessions are held every year across the country. However, despite this extensive coverage, only 65 percent of the children in India receive all vaccines during the first year of their life.

UNICEF, AIR and AROI have been conducting capacity building workshops for Private FM as well as All India Radio journalists since 2014 to help them integrate meaningful, appealing radio jingles and talk shows on the critical messages of child health, Routine Immunization and End Violence.

The awards received entries from 120 presenters across radio stations in six categories - Best PSA, Best Jingle,  Best RJ link,  Best Creative Campaign,  Mission Indradhanush Best Radio Spot Award and Best Message Clarity Award.

The occasion was graced by UNICEF Celebrity Advocate Madhuri Dixit, AIR OSD Rajeev Kumar Shukla, K G Suresh, Director General, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Neeraj Aggarwal, ADG Vividh Bharti, Mumbai, Anuradha Prasad, President, AROI.

"Radio as a medium has a far-reaching impact on a wide and diversified audience.  I am delighted to present these awards to the brightest minds in radio who are passionately contributing in creating awareness about the benefits of immunization in various communities," Madhuri Dixit said. "As an UNICEF Advocate, I would like to reiterate how all children, no matter where they live or their circumstances, have the right to survive and to thrive – and we each have the responsibility to help them realize that right," she added.

She lauded the efforts by Radio Jockeys and producers in creating awareness on child health issue and making the larger public, especially the most vulnerable, aware of their rights.

AIR’s Shukla said: "As a public broadcaster, we have a responsibility towards social commitment.
